The buzz around The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
