The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
