Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
